Free Nutrition Classes!
Cooperative Extension of Niagara County provides limited resource individuals and families with educational programming on nutrition and health, meal planning, budgeting food dollars, and safe food preparation. These programs are made possible by funding from two grants, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), and Eat Smart New York (ESNY).
Nutrition classes are taught by trained Nutrition Educators, and are free for Niagara County residents who are food stamp-eligible or meet other income requirements. Class participants receive interactive, hands-on learning on how to: plan and prepare quick, easy meals; prepare food safely and keep it safe to eat; make better food choices for good health; and stretch food dollars.
In FY2010, over 400 Niagara County residents enrolled in either ESNY or EFNEP. 290 people completed the programs and made improvements in nutrition practices, food safety practices, and food resource management. Here's what some recent graduates had to say about the program:
- "No one in my family ever discusses food the way we do in class! There are so many things I have learned about my daughter and how food helps her as she grows."
- "I've learned a lot about the different food groups. I've learned what's good for you and what's bad for you."
- "I have expanded my food universe!"
Our aim is to help Niagara County residents eat better, feel better, and do better!
